Inside: Create your very own beautiful painted flower pot keepsake. I’m a total sucker for cute keepsake crafts and this flower pot craft makes the absolute best gift for any occasion or special person in your toddler’s life. In this post, you’ll learn how to create one of your own.
Beautiful Painted Flower Pot Craft
Okay, mamas, I have to admit that I am totally obsessed with how stinkin’ cute these painted flower pots turned out! We created four of them so we could keep two and gift two.
We’ve got the finished products on our backyard deck and they really just add so much life and color to the area that smile every time I’m out there.
The best thing about this craft is that it doesn’t have to be perfect. Honestly, the little smudges and smears from the handprints make them more endearing and personalized. Those homemade touches make them more special.
Flower Pot Design Options
We created two different designs. For the first pot, we recreated our Mother’s Day Craft idea with footprint butterflies and handprint flowers. If you missed the post, be sure to check it out! It is a craft that would be perfect for Mother’s Day, spring, or summer.
I wanted to add an extra special touch to this butterfly flower pot though because we gifted one to Grandma who recently had undergone some orthopedic surgery. We wanted something really nice to cheer her up and this totally did!
In between the butterfly and flower, I added the words, “Grandma, your love helps me grow. Love, Henry“. This simple gesture made her feel so touched when we presented her gifts to her.
For the second flower pot, I simply had my toddler stamp his handprints all over the pot. To do this, I painted his hand with different colors and helped press his handprint onto the pot.
We just repeated that process until we covered the whole pot. I like that some overlap each other and that it is a rainbow of colors.

Waterproofing The Flower Pots
Once the pots were dry, I sprayed them with a waterproofing spray so that the pots could be kept outdoors. I did two coats, just to be safe.
We could have used acrylic paint to avoid this step. However, washable paint is really the way to go for younger toddlers because acrylic paint can get everywhere and stain badly. Washable paint is perfect for young toddlers and is what I recommend.
If you have no idea where to start in painting with toddlers, be sure to check out my How To Paint With Toddlers post where I break it down for you and detail how to set up, clean up, and which supplies you’ll need. I link all of my favorite supplies within the post too.
Planting Flowers
The last step for this craft is adding potting soil and planting your favorite potted flowers. I love the color combination with these pink flowers we chose. The flowers really pop with the paint colors we used.
Now we’ve got beautiful flower pots to admire every day and as a bonus, it has created another daily activity for my toddler: watering the flowers. He is having fun practicing his pouring skills each morning keeping our flowers nice and hydrated.
