Inside: Learn how to create some spooky Halloween crafts! Get in the Halloween spirit with your kids by painting Frankenstein, spiders, and ghosts together.
It’s that time of year for all things spooky! These Halloween crafts are the perfect way to kick off Trick-or-Treat season with your kids.
What You Need For Spooky Halloween Crafts
- purple, orange, and black construction paper
- washable paint
- white, black, green, orange, purple
- thinner paint brushes (4)
- thicker paint brushes (3)
- old wet wash cloth
How To Set Up For Spooky Halloween Crafts
Set your painting station up and gather all of your supplies (see list above).
If you’ve never painted with a toddler before or aren’t sure which supplies you might need for painting crafts, check out this post that details exactly how to set up, clean up, and paint with a toddler. It also has all of my favorite painting must-haves linked!
If you’re doing all of these paintings in one day, set up the footprint/handprint paint colors atop the coordinating construction paper color so that you can easily grab everything for the next craft without searching around for what you need or forgetting which paper goes with what paint, etc.
For those doing all three paintings at once, complete the handprint/footprint part, wiping off fingers/toes with the wet wash cloth in between paintings. Complete all of the handprints/footprints first and than later work on the finishing touches while your child freely paints on a painting pad.
Frankenstein Painting
For the Frankenstein painting, start with creating green feet. Paint your child’s feet green (we used the neon paint for this) using the thicker brush and stamp them onto the purple paper. Remember that the toes will be Frankenstein’s ‘hair’, so make sure they are stamped facing up.
Add the finishing details – eyes, a mouth, and bolts. Afterward, add some cute extras, like polka dots and a Halloween message – I chose “Trick or Treat”. You could even add “smell my feet” to this message!
You, alternatively, could use glued on googly eyes for the eyes instead of painting them. Another option is to paint your child’s foot green and their toes black so that Frankenstein has black ‘hair’.
Spooky Ghost Painting
For the ghost painting, start with using another thicker brush to paint your child’s feet white. Remember to stamp their feet heel side up, as the heel will be the ghost’s face.
Add your finishing touches – which are easy for this one – just a black ghostly face. You then can add in some cute details, just like the first painting. I chose polka dots and “BOO!” which turned out perfect!
Creepy Spider Painting
Lastly, for the spider painting, start with painting your child’s hands in black paint with another bigger paintbrush.
Stamp their handprints with the fingers pointing downward. Try to stamp them in the upper middle portion of the paper so they are closer to the web you will create.
For the spider faces, add in eyes and a mouth – again – you could choose to glue googly eyes on!
Now it’s time to create the spider webs. Using the thin brush and black paint, draw four lines coming from the same corner point spreading out into a fan shape. Afterward, connect those lines together using a curved line for the webbing. Repeat this in three corners of the paper. For the spiders – paint a line connecting the top of the spider to the two top corner webs.
Lastly, add a Halloween message using purple paint – we stuck with ‘Happy Halloween’ for ours.
Wrap it Up
And that’s it! These are all so fun to create – your kids will love seeing their handprint/footprint come to life with the finishing details. Don’t forget to display your spooky creations in the house. We love to hang ours in the playroom where we spend the most time.
