Inside: This color sorting activity incorporates identifying all of the beautiful colors that fall brings and fine motor skills. It’s a super easy set up that your little one will enjoy doing!
Fall Leaves Color Sorting Activity
Fall is such a beautiful time of year – it’s so exciting watching the colors change from the greens of summer to the reds, yellows, and oranges that autumn brings.
I wanted to incorporate the changes that come with fall into an activity, so that we could talk about what happens during this seasonal change while practicing our colors.
What You Need for Fall Leaves Color Sorting Activity
- silicone muffin liners
- or any sort of ‘cup’, such as paper muffin liners, play kitchen cups/tea cups, stacking cups, etc.
- we chose red, orange, and yellow (brown could work too!)
- tweezers
- miniature leaves (you can incorporate acorns and pumpkins too!)
- I found mine at Hobby Lobby in the ‘table scatter’ section
- these ones are really similar to what I bought at Hobby Lobby (bonus – they include cute acorns and pumpkins too!)
- search ‘fall table scatter’ in Amazon for other options
That’s it! Super easy!
How To Set Up for Fall Leaves Color Sorting Activity
Simply gather up all of your supplies and arrange everything on the floor or at a table.
I set the three muffin liners in front of my son with the tweezers and fall items next to them.
*This activity requires supervision as the table scatter items can be a choking hazard – use at your own discretion*
How to Do Fall Leaves Color Sorting Activity
Demonstrate how to pick up the leaves with the tweezers and drop them into the muffin liners.
Explain that you are sorting colors of leaves into the ‘cups’.
This can look something like, “Mommy is picking up the red leaf and it goes in the red cup! Now where does the orange leaf go? (Pause) You’re right! It goes in the orange cup! Now you try. What color leaf did you pick up? (Pause) Yes, red! Where does the red leaf go? (Pause) Yes, here in the red cup! Good job!”
After just one quick demonstration, my toddler (2.5 years old) was super eager to jump in and take over. He’s totally at that age of ‘I do it myself!’, so he didn’t hesitate to show me his skills.
He had a fun time switching between using the tweezers and using his hands to sort the colors. After awhile, he extended the play by himself by practicing pouring the filled muffin liners into the other muffin liners. I gave him a few empty sensory bottles too and he enjoyed using the tweezers to fill those up with leaves as well.
I love when play gets unexpectedly continued like that! So don’t be afraid to sit back and see where they take the game.
Wrap It Up
This is definitely a fun little fall activity that we will be doing again – it’s SO easy to set up that I absolutely don’t mind doing it every so often during the season this year. And what an easy way to practice colors and fine motor skills!
