ABC Rescue Bins are the game changing twist on busy bins that you need in your mom tool kit. Check out these fun spring and Easter themed busy bin ideas that you can recreate in your home today.
What are ABC Rescue Bins?
ABC Rescue Bins are premade (by you) toddler busy bins that you can pull out whenever your day needs rescuing. Whether that be from negative or unwanted behaviors, such as meltdowns and bickering amongst siblings, or from the decision fatigue that comes with trying to plan and coordinate fun and engaging learning activities on the spot.

The ‘ABC’ in ABC Rescue Bins
ABC Rescue Bins differ from traditional toddler busy bins in that they follow an incredibly easy formula for what to fill the bins with. I know that this is the part that I always used to struggle with in the past until I came up with this simple formula.
The formula uses the acronym ‘ABC’ for ‘Ace It, Build It, Color It’. You are going to add one item for each of these three categories for a total of just three activities in each ABC Rescue bin.
For ‘Ace It’, you’ll put in something that helps them grow a skill that they are working on. This could be anything – from color recognition and scissor skills to basic math and reading.
For ‘Build It’, you’ll put in one building toy such as Magnatiles, Legos, Gears, felt sandwich pieces, lacing beads, etc. Hint: This is the item that almost always leads to independent playtime!
For ‘Color It’, you’ll put in one item that they can color. This can be so many different things: Color Wonder, Water Wow, dry erase markers, chalk and mini chalk boards, crayons, paint sticks, do a dot markers, etc.
Two Tips for Successful ABC Rescue Bins
Do not skip these two crucial steps in creating your own ABC Rescue Bins.
- I cannot recommend this 6-container shelving system for ABC Rescue Bins enough. These bins are wide and tall enough to accommodate a flat sheet of paper and all of the toys and activities necessary for successful busy bins. In addition to their size – the fact that they are in a shelf and not stacked 6-bins-high means you won’t be lifting a ton of weight trying to get the bottom bins out like traditional busy bins.
- Absolutely utilize zipper pouches for organizing each of the three activities. This is going to help prevent the bin just being dumped out, played with for 30 seconds, and walked away from. It also will make ABC Rescue Bin rotation so much easier and faster. I recommend these big zipper pouches and this pack of various sized zipper pouches.

Spring Themed ABC Rescue Bin Idea #1
A: Ace It – Easter Lacing Cards Free Printable
I was so happy to stumble upon this fun Easter Lacing Card Free Printable by TotSchooling.net. Get your own freebie by clicking here. I used the lacing string from the Melissa and Doug Lacing Beads. My 5 year old is really into lacing right now, so I knew this would be perfect!
B: Build It – Egg Shape Match Up
This Egg Shape Match Up toy has been a hit for years in our house. My kiddos like to play with it as shown – matching up the shapes – but they also take it into the play kitchen and play make believe with it too.
They love it so much that I’ve put the Egg Letter Match Up toy on our birthday wish list this year.
C: Color It – Spring Do a Dot Free Printable with Do a Dot Markers
My 2 year old is very into dot markers right now and frequently shouts, ‘dot, dot dot!’ to let us know she wants the dot markers brought out PRONTO, so I always am sure to include a few different Do a Dot Coloring Pages in our ABC Rescue Bins.

Spring Themed ABC Rescue Bin Idea #2
A: Ace It – Spring Play Dough Number Mats Free Printable
These Play Dough Number Mats by TotSchooling.net are so stinkin’ cute! I knew they would be a big hit and help my two kids work on strengthening their hands as a pre-writing exercise, as well as practice number sense and counting.
Get your freebie by clicking here. I added in play dough scissors and kid scissors and two jars of play dough for this bag, as shown.
B: Build It – Mini Puzzles
These mini puzzles are the perfect size for ABC Rescue Bins. I made it a little more challenging for my 5 year old by combining the pieces for all of the puzzles together so that it is also a little bit of an unscrambling activity in addition to the puzzle itself.
For my 2 year old, I’ll help separate out the different puzzles, if I see her going for this activity.
C: Color It – Spring Coloring Pages Free Printable with Paint Sticks
How sweet are these spring themed coloring pages from both kraftyplanner.com and lifeissweeterbydesign.com? What I love about free printables is that you can print again and again – perfect if your kids are like my 2 year old and want to color allllllll day long.
For this bin I added paint sticks (a top favorite for my daughter right now). Get your freebies by clicking here and here.
Spring Themed ABC Rescue Bin Idea #3
A: Ace It – Spring Pattern Block Mats Free Printable with Pattern Blocks
Both my kids, ages 2 and 5 love pattern blocks. I was honestly surprised when my 2 year old started joining in on pattern block mats even months ago. I encourage you to give them a try if you’re on the fence for your younger toddler.
These spring pattern block mats from both prekinders.com and adventure-in-a-box.com are great for Easter. Get your own freebies by clicking here and here.
B: Build It – Farm Themed Magnatiles
You can never go wrong with Magnatiles. These fun expansion packs are great for breathing new life into a well-loved toy and are the perfect gift for siblings.
We love this farm themed Magnatile expansion pack. I like to pair these with farm animal figurines and magnetic people (aren’t they so neat?!).
C: Color It – Spring Do a Dot Free Printable with Dot Stickers
Here is another fun way to use do a dot coloring pages… with dot stickers. They can either color the picture first and then add dot stickers or just use dot stickers alone.
The do a dot pages are part of the same set shown in Rescue Bin number one and are by The Artisan Life. You can get this freebie by clicking here.
Spring Themed ABC Rescue Bin Idea #4
A: Ace It – Spring Letter Match Free Printable
I was really excited to find these two letter match activities by twopinkpeonies.com (another favorite blogger!). She offers two different versions – an uppercase and a lowercase and has tips on how to make it more or less challenging in her post.
All you have to do to get started is print the page and then write the letters of the alphabet on dot stickers. You can get this freebie by clicking here.
B: Build It – Head to Tail Puzzles
These head to tail puzzles are a fun, different twist on traditional jigsaw puzzles. For younger kids, I’d offer just 2-3 animals at a time. My 5 year old started out that way when he was little, but now can have all of them out at once and solve them, no problem.
They all have unique pieces so that the animals actually have to match properly.
C: Color It – Spring Coloring Pages Free Printable with Markers
Here are some more spring coloring pages from lifeissweeterbydesign.com that you can add to your ABC Rescue Bins. For this bin, I added washable markers, which I have all together in a large zipper pouch.

Spring Themed ABC Rescue Bin Idea #5
A: Ace It – Spring Bingo Chip Color Match Free Printable
Magnetic bingo chips are MY favorite manipulative to play with. They are just so satisfying to pick up with the magnetic wands.
I like to pair them with colorful do a dot pages and have the kids match the bingo chip to the colors in the picture. I know in this example photo my colors aren’t matched up (HA!), but you get the idea. Afterward, they can use the magnetic wand to sweep over the picture, pick them all up, and do it again.
These colorful do a dot pages by easypeasylearners.com can by found by clicking here (there is an option for the full colored version).
B: Build It – Barn + Animal Match Up
There are a bunch of different ways to play with these barn and animal match up toys. The barns are all different colors, so you can start by sorting and matching colors, but they also have numbers on them with corresponding numbers on the roofs to practice number sense. Not only that, but they have fun little barn animals that can be put inside the barns and played with.
We extend this activity further almost every time we play with this toy – and in this case, we extended our play by doing a magnetic bingo chip color sort with the barns. I just showed the kids how they can place bingo chips inside the barns to do a color sort and then use the magnetic wand to pick them all up and do it again. This is a favorite with my two year old right now.
C: Color It – Spring Color By Code Free Printable with Crayons
Color by code coloring pages with crayons brings me back to my own childhood. I have so many fond memories of doing these types of coloring pages as a little kid and, honestly, still enjoy doing them as an adult. It’s so fun to see my own kids now doing them now.
I found several different awesome resources for these color by code pages.
First, the color by shape freebie as well as many color by number pages by fantasticfunandlearning.com can be found by clicking here.
The Easter Egg color by number and two more freebies by totschooling.net can be found by clicking here.
The Easter Time color by code freebies by theprimaryparade.com can be found by clicking here (this one is about 1/3 of the way down the page).
Spring Themed ABC Rescue Bin Idea #6
A: Ace It – Spring Tracing Pages Free Printable with Pencils
My 5 year old currently has a fascination with lines and mazes – the perfect pre-writing activity to master handwriting skills.
I chose to add a pencil with a pencil grip for my 5 year old and one without for my 2 year old since she is still too young for that and just uses hers to scribble.
These line tracing and maze freebie worksheets by skiptomylou.org are awesome and can be found by clicking here.
B: Build It – Fishing Magnetic Letter + Number Match Up
I love this version of the classic magnetic fishing pole game because the fish have both letters and numbers on them (as well as coordinating colors). It’s a good one and built really sturdy!
C: Color It – Spring Q-Tip Painting Pages Free Printable with Washable Paint
In the past, I haven’t used messy art supplies in ABC Rescue Bins, but figured I’d give it a shot with this really cute Q-Tip painting freebie by theprimaryparade.com and it did not disappoint.
Both kids were begging to do the activity again and again multiple days in a row (good thing I printed several copies!). Washable paint is so easy to clean up – and while this one does need direct supervision – it was so worth it for the countless moments of joy it brought them.
You can get the freebie by clicking here and scrolling about halfway down to number 20 in the list of activities.
