Inside: This nature seek and find activity is the perfect way to explore the outdoors and learn more about nature. A great vocabulary building activity!
Nature Seek and Find
The weather is still really beautiful here, so that means we are spending as much time outdoors as we can. I know that in just a few short months, we will be missing these warm days, so we are soaking them in.
Already some of the edge from the blazing summertime heat has vanished, so that means we’ve been able to do some more activities outdoors besides always playing with water. My toddler had a blast with the nature seek and find activity!
How to Do Nature Seek and Find
This activity is as easy as it gets. It requires no set up at all. Simply hand your kid a bag or bowl (anything that can hold their treasures in) and get outside.
Explore your backyard and neighborhood searching for treasures found in nature. This is an activity that I would totally let your child lead with. You can prompt them here and there when they overlook something cool – but let them find things on their own.
When they find something, you can create some dialogue about what they found. This is a perfect time to build some vocabulary. You can name the items or chat about how something looks, feels, and smells (texture, color, odor).
This can look like, “oh wow! look what you found! what color is that flower?” Or, “what did you find? a feather! cool!” And also, “that’s such a pretty flower, does it smell good?”. Just some simple dialogue.
Bonus if you find some cool bugs to watch! Lately, we’ve been seeing tons of grasshoppers and my toddler gets such a kick out of seeing them jump across the lawn.
You can collect anything you find really… flower petals and leaves, leaves from bushes, shrubs, and trees, feathers, rocks, small twigs, weeds found in the grass, etc.
Let this activity be a time that your child can connect with our natural world and learn about the outdoors.
It’s one thing to read about items found in nature, but a whole different thing to actually experience them. We have read so many board books about wildlife, insects, and flowers, but getting outside and touching, seeing, and smelling them has really helped my toddler understand the world around him better.
