Mamas, I’ve got a super easy activity for your little ones today that is perfect for learning new skills. As a bonus, it only requires one thing: a spray bottle (these are our favorites!!). That’s it for this spray bottle nature walk activity.
All that you need to do is fill the spray bottle up with water, hand it over to your toddler and head outside. Then watch the magic happen. My toddler was completely obsessed with this activity from the moment he saw the spray bottle being filled with water.
What To Do: Garden Walk
This activity is super flexible. We started out in our own yard, exploring the different things found in our garden. You can start them off with a little prompting, “Can you spray mommy’s flowers? They are thirsty! Good job!”.
Then you can let them lead and spray whatever they find interesting. Help them learn some new vocabulary and object identification by naming the things they spray or asking them what they are spraying.
This can look like, “oh, I see you’re spraying mama’s tomato plants.” And also, “What vegetable are you spraying now?”. Remember to give them a few long seconds to respond to your question. Toddlers need time to process before they respond when learning new words.
We had fun exploring our whole yard and spraying anything in sight while working on these skills. Actually, identifying things that we found in nature turned out to be half the fun!
You can also work on colors while spraying the flowers, plants, and trees found in your garden. Try prompting your toddler by saying, “Can you spray the yellow flowers now?” Great! Now what color flowers are these?”.
What To Do: Neighborhood Walk
After you finish up in the garden, head out on a walk together while your toddler has the spray bottle. Doing this will provide even more opportunities to name objects found to practice vocabulary and color identification. It will feel like a game to your toddler to spray the items found along the sidewalk that you name, such as leaves, rocks, twigs, or even cracks in the sidewalk.
Honestly, this activity kept my toddler engaged for far longer than I ever thought it would. After our nature walk, he moved on to spraying the driveway and watching the pattern the water spray made as it turned the concrete dark. This is great for practicing ’cause and effect’ – which is always a favorite for toddlers.
